Cold Damage to Trees Jan., 2021

 I just learned that Palms can fail two years after a hard, windy freeze. The North side of the trunk has most likely been damaged by the freeze resulting in the loss of structural integrity. Trunk failure with a healthy looking palm can occur up to 2 years later as the palm grows and adds weight to the damaged trunk. The top of the healthy palm is heavy when it's full and green and the damaged trunk will not be able to the support the healthy looking top or fronds.

Palms grow from the top so each year's growth adds height and weight. 

Test the trunk each year to monitor the integrity of the January, 2021 portion the the palm trunk. Strap something onto the palm trunk real close to the top or just under the fronds. It doesn't matter if the fronds are brown or green. This will keep track of the year the great freeze happened on the palm. Palms are not trees so to constrict the trunk will not hurt it. Don't squeeze the life out of it, of course, but get it tight enough to hold.

Please make sure your palm is far enough away from targets under it that if the top fell it wouldn't hurt anything. The skinny portion of a palm trunk indicates a bad or hard year it had. Keep a close watch on the thinner portions on a palm trunk. 

I'm not attempting to sell palm removals at all. I just want you to know the risks that MAY be present if your palm is real tall over pools and areas where people will be present. Be aware, Be alert and Be safe. You can leaf your tree concerns to me...

Essential services

TreeCare and service personnel and companies are considered essential. Trees are necessary to produce oxygen for us. It takes approximately 5-8 trees per human, not including animals and everything else that needs oxygen.

Webworms

The webworms are here. Put fly strip around the tree to stop the caterpillars from crawling up the tree(s). They don’t fly, they crawl up trees or drop down from taller trees.

The egret birds are coming, the egrets are coming!!

Our Climate

Arborists in our area have been told to do our Spring treatments. I’m still reluctant to fertilize just yet. I don’t want the new growth freezing. I don’t trust Texas weather.

Emerald Ash Tree Borer

 Fear not !! I can systemically treat, no spraying, TO PREVENT Emerald Ash Borer, and from what I've learned, save your Ash trees.

 The way this works is this treatment kills the adult beetle BEFORE she lays eggs. These eggs hatch into larva that borer perpendicular into limbs. This doesn't "kill" the limb right away. With the weight of the foliage and a gust of wind the branch, no matter how large, falls on top of whatever is under it. It's like drilling holes into the limb.

  If a climber doesn't know to look for the D shaped holes that the larva makes when exiting the limb, branch, or stock that it has been boring holes into like a drill... the branch breaks easy and if an unexperienced climber isn't tied in that climber falls to the ground hitting limbs on the way down and that's big trouble.

 Always make sure the person climbing your tree has a harness on and a rope that ties to the tree as a safety measure to catch the climber so he or she doesn't hit the ground bouncing off limbs on the way down.

Tree Heartwood vs. Deadwood

Many professors and the like say the internal wood tissue is dead.

So if a plant or plant material dies it decomposes. The decomposed material provides nutrients but doesn't offer much more. It offers no storage of nutrients, no structural integrity or the growth of parenchyma cells, just to name a few things.

The Internal wood of a tree is NOT dead. It offers storage, structural integrity and does not decompose unless through an injury.

So what do we call this wood? Zombie-wood? NO... well maybe.

The name of this internal wood is Heartwood.

RoundUp Round Up

RoundUp - Not using PPE,  personal protective equipment that is REQUIRED and on the label is deadly ! Neglecting to use PPE will result in consequences. 

Having a TDA Pest Control License teaches us how to properly use chemicals. 

Weeds are classified as a pest. 

The license teaches us that if we are using a chemical that is labeled as dangerous or hazardous we have to have a blood test that will set a base level of how much if any of the chemical is in our blood. Follow up with quarterly blood tests. 

We MUST throughly read and understand the label. THE ENTIRE LABEL.... it’s the law. 

Those who treat without a license are supposed to be fined. 

There’s a license that is at a lower cost for treating on your own property. The education is worth the time. It’ll save your life !

It’s easy... obtain the study guides... take the test... pass the test or study more and retake the test.

Bradford Pear Trees

Bradford Pear trees are not found growing naturally. They're a hybrid tree. They have mostly codominant stems, trunks and branch unions. These unions have very little structural integrity, splitting apart and falling on property. The bark in between the codominant stems is called included bark. This bark is under pressure and most times dead with decay setting in. The decay allows diseases and insects to survive comfortably further weakening the union.
 Another issue is these trees are highly susceptible to cotton root rot fungi. This fungus kills the tree. It was here in the soil long before the trees were. Much of our landscape used to be cotton fields. Even though the cotton crops are gone the fungi will survive in the soil for... well almost forever.

Digging With Air So Not to Damage The Tree

Dying branches ? Using an air excavation tool I can remove dirt that covers the root flare. This tool digs with pressurized air so NOT to sever roots or damage the tree. We can also remove girdling roots that would choke off the circulation to parts of the tree killing those parts. Root flares that are buried are serious problems that lead to even greater problems if not corrected. Problems such as fungal, bacterial or viral diseases entering into the tree, girdling roots, canopy dieback and more. A simple fix to head off major problems. I have the tools and the capability. Rely on me.

Flat Mushrooms At The Base Of A Tree

Ganoderma signs are flat mushroom conks at the base of the tree. The symptoms are sometimes branches dying. However, there may be no outward symptoms. This fungal disease feeds on lignin. Lignin is what makes wood hard, gives wood its rigidity. If there is any doubt I can always perform a Tomography test. This will create a picture of what the inside of your tree looks like. Sorta like an MRI for trees. Why take a chance ?

  We first would prune (trim) the dead limbs out, then test in order to make an educated decision on whether to spend money to save the tree or replace it.

Grass Dying

We are having issues with Chinch bugs killing the grass. DO NOT blame it on the trees please. Get a hold of a turf expert or me, Curtis Hopper #texastreeman, I have a TDA Pest Control License  0486846 and I can get rid of them.
  On the other hand... If your yard is shaded most of the day you can let the grass blades grow longer and/or have your trees's lower canopy raised to between 10 and 15 feet above the ground. That should do the trick. Also the thatch needs to be removed. I have other tips and tricks. Get in touch and I'll help out.
